History of the F.P. Walshe Alumni Tournament

F.P. Walshe has produced elite volleyball talent and their skill is still being put on display in colleges, recreational leagues and competitive tournaments throughout the country. In December of 2013, Jordan Gunderson, an F.P. Walshe graduate from 2007, had just finished playing in the annual F.P. Walshe Flyers alumni basketball tournament when he found himself thinking, why on earth is there no alumni volleyball tournament? The players and talent existed, but no one had ever brought them together.

After gauging the interest of some other volleyball alumni, organization began and the first F.P. Walshe Alumni Volleyball tournament was organized and held in June of 2014 with the purpose of bringing friends together, creating a competitive environment, and raising funds for the F.P. Walshe volleyball program. The tournament featured 4 men’s and 6 women’s teams and was an instant success with over $1,000 being raised for the high school volleyball programs in its first year.

After a two year break in 2015 and 2016 while Walshe was being renovated, the tournament resumed in 2017 and has been held annually in May of each year. The tournament is a unique opportunity for former F.P. Walshe graduates, and new members of the F.P. Walshe volleyball family to participate in a competitive, non co-ed environment and has continued to support the high school programs with over $2,900 being raised in the 2019 tournament.

Over 100 players have participated since 2015 and the hope is that the tournament will only continue to grow as more graduates join the alumni ranks and return to see old friends, meet new friends, and support Flyers volleyball.
